The Statue of Liberty at New York Harbor had been a gift by the people of France to express international friendship.
It is globally recognized as one of the universal symbols of political freedom and democracy.
Inscribed in the statue is Emma Lazarus famous poem, inspired by the mass exodus of Jewish refugees from Russia to America in 1880.
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
